Our next Rialto Recommends is Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki's 1997 masterpiece PRINCESS MONONOKE which upon its US release in 1999 was Miyazaki's commercial breakthrough into the US arthouse market. Ashitaka, a prince of the disappearing Emishi people, is cursed by a demonized boar god and must journey to the west to find a cure. Along the way, he encounters San, a young human woman fighting to protect the forest, and Lady Eboshi, who is trying to destroy it. Ashitaka must find a way to bring balance to this conflict. With its epic story and breathtaking visuals, PRINCESS MONONOKE is a landmark in the world of animation. The Philadelphia Inquirer raved "Anyone who relishes seeing the reach and scope of the genre redefined should not miss this marvelously accomplished picture." While the Wall Street Journal raved "Some of the images in PRINCESS MONONOKE are not just unforgettable, they're almost edible in their vibrantly colored beauty. I haven't taken in animation quite so hungrily since I was a kid watching Disney features for the first few times." PRINCESS MONONOKE is streaming on HBOMax or available for purchase (but not rental) from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others. Whether you've seen it before or are just discovering it, now is a great time to check-out this arthouse classic.
