As we close out 2020 and head into 2021 our next Rialto Recommends is about change, adaptation and new beginnings. Carroll Ballard's 1996 film FLY AWAY HOME stars Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin. After Amy (Anna Paquin) loses her mother in a car accident, she must uproot her life and move to Canada to live with her father, Thomas, (Jeff Daniels), an oddball inventor with whom she has no relationship. She initially struggles to find her her place in her new home, but things change when she stumbles upon a collection of abandoned goose eggs. When the eggs hatch, Amy and her dad work together teaching the motherless birds to fly south for the winter, and their relationship blooms. Well-acted and beautifully filmed, FLY AWAY HOME offers heartwarming entertainment for moviegoers of all ages. Roger Ebert raved "A former cinematographer himself, [Ballard] works with the great cameraman Caleb Deschanel to make the film visually uplifting, and the story is quirky enough and the dialogue so fresh and well-acted that this film rises above its genre." While the New York Times said "The tender beauty of Carroll Ballard's FLY AWAY HOME goes well beyond what might be expected from a movie about things that hatch." FLY AWAY HOME is available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, Vudu, GooglePlay, YouTube, Apple, DirectTV and others.
