40 years ago this week the characters of Judy, Violet, and Doralee leapt off movie screens across America and into the hearts of moviegoers. Part satire, part farce, part social commentary and proof that a winning combo of all three can be entertaining, provocative and successful at the box office 1980's 9 TO 5 is our next Rialto Recommends. With this simple log-line 9 TO 5 was the second most successful movie released by 20th Century Fox in 1980: Three female employees of a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot find a way to turn the tables on him. The most successful was the Star Wars sequel The Empire Strikes Back. The Boston Globe raved "This is one of the most delightful films of the year. It's an entertaining movie with a social and political point to make about office politics." While Variety wrote "Although it can probably be argued that Patricia Resnick and director Colin Higgins' script [from a story by Resnick] at times borders on the inane, the bottom line is that this picture is a lot of fun." 9 TO 5 is streaming on Starz and DirectTV or is available to rent for a modest fee from RedBox, Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others. If you've never seen 9 TO 5 it is worth checking out and if you have seen it the film is worth revisiting as one of the 80's best comedies. Anyone who tells you otherwise is likely a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot.
