With so many of us working or virtually visiting friends and family through the use of video conferencing products like Skype, Zoom and others, we thought it might be a good time to take a fresh look at a pioneering film from 2000. TIMECODE from writer/director Mike Figgis tells four stories simultaneously that converge as the film progresses. Director Mike Figgis helmed this ground-breaking experimental feature, filmed with four synchronized digital video cameras in four separate locations. The story, outlined in advance but otherwise improvised, was enacted in a single continuous take, like a stage play, with the unedited images from all four locations presented on the screen at once. Figgis and his crew chose the best single run-through, and the result is the film's final release version. Starring Saffron Burrows, Salma Hayek, Glenne Headly, Holly Hunter, Kyle MacLachlan, Alessandro Nivola, Julian Sands, Stellan Skarsgard, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Steven Weber TIMECODE was controversial and challenging for audiences in 2000. The Detroit News raved "An intriguing, often very entertaining thriller with deliciously sexy, satirical and melodramatic flourishes." While the Detroit Free-Press said "It will be argued that Time Code is more of a techno-stunt than a dramatic experience, but the stories turn out to be surprisingly affecting." And the Denver Post said "Surprisingly breezy to watch, because Figgis smashingly manipulates sound to focus our attention from one place to another." Check out TIMECODE for a modest rental fee from Amazon, Fandango, Vudu, YouTube, Google Play or Apple HERE and share your thoughts on if and how this experimental feature has stood the test of time. Was it ahead of its time?
