In honor of Hanukkah our next Rialto Recommends is Don Bluth's 1986 animated film AN AMERICAN TAIL. How is AN AMERICAN TAIL a Hanukkah film you ask? According to BuzzFeed "In this animated film, a young Russian-Jewish mouse, Fievel, flees persecution by the cats. As the movie begins, Fievel and his family are celebrating Hanukkah and his father is teaching him all about the great United States. America, as his father tells him, is supposed to be a place where the cats can't attack the mice. Although there are cats everywhere in America, Fievel still perseveres. It's an important analogy of the realities of anti-Jewish discrimination as it's told through a children's movie." The New York Times said "Mr. Bluth has rediscovered the beauties to be found in the so-called old-fashioned animation techniques used by Walt Disney in such classics as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "Bambi."" AN AMERICAN TAIL is streaming on STARZ and DirectTv or available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube and Vudu. The film introduced James Horner, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil's classic song Somewhere Out There which was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song and won Grammy Awards for Best Song Written Specifically for Motion Picture or Television and Song of the Year for the song's performance by Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram.
