We previously featured director Jocelyn Moorhouse with our selection of The Dressmaker for Rialto Recommends. Today we feature her 1995 film HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT starring Winona Ryder, Ellen Burstyn, Anne Bancroft, Maya Angelou, Alfre Woodard, Jean Simmon, Kate Nelligan, and Kate Capshaw. Soon-to-be-wed graduate student Finn Dodd (Winona Ryder) develops cold feet when she suspects her fiancé is cheating on her. In order to clear her head, Finn visits her grandmother, Hy (Ellen Burstyn), and great aunt, Glady Joe Cleary (Anne Bancroft), in Grasse, Calif. There, Finn learns that Hy and Glady Joe are members of a group of passionate quilters, and over the course of her visit she is regaled with tales of love and life by women who have collected rich experiences and much wisdom. The New York Times raved "This exceptional film takes the makings of a limp "women's weeper" and as if by magic, spins them into gold." While the San Francisco Chronicle said "Flat out, "How to Make an American Quilt" is a wonderful movie -- soulful, funny, eccentric and filled with a love of female humanity." HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT is streaming on HBOMax, HBO, and DirectTV or is available for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others HERE.
