In honor of Thanksgiving we are encoring our 24th Rialto Recommends choice from last Spring. It's worth noting that since we made this recommendation, we've recommended an additional 220 films! Who knew we'd be doing this for so long? From 2000, our next Rialto Recommends is WHAT'S COOKING? starring Joan Chen, Mercedes Ruhl, Alfre Woodard, and Lanie Kazan as the matriarchs of four contemporary Los Angeles families gathering to celebrate Thanksgiving. That most American of holidays, Thanksgiving, serves as the focal point for this raptly celebratory look at the modern American family. WHAT'S COOKING? interweaves the workings of four diverse Los Angeles households-African American, Jewish, Latino, and Vietnamese-as they make their preparations for arriving guests and relatives for the traditionally festive dinner. Who but an outsider to these goings-on would have the keen perception and discernment to capture the detail and nuance of family relationships and the cultural specificity of behavior, decor, and most of all food with this degree of accuracy and freedom? The Los Angeles Times said "Has unexpected substance and is a formidable accomplishment in that it brings dimension to its nearly 40 principal characters." And Roger Ebert raved "Because the stories are so skillfully threaded together, the movie doesn't feel like an exercise: Each of the stories stands on its own." WHAT'S COOKING? is streaming on Tubi or is available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, Google YouTube, Apple and Vudu.
