Before To Die For, Days of Thunder, Far and Away and Eyes Wide Shut, Nicole Kidman starred in a tense Australian thriller called DEAD CALM which is our next Rialto Recommends. Released in 1989 DEAD CALM was directed by Phillip Noyce and also stars Sam Neill and Billy Zane. An Australian couple take a sailing trip in the Pacific to forget about a terrible accident. While on the open sea, in dead calm weather conditions, they come across a ship with one survivor who is not at all what he seems. The Los Angeles Times said "A spare, smart, seductive piece of real movie making with (almost) every loophole covered, a superlative cast and enough tension to keep us all hyperventilating for hours." While in London The Guardian said "It’s Nicole Kidman who steals the show. Forced to endure the brunt of Hughie’s attacks, Rae is both cool and desperate, calculating and vulnerable, with a strange energy that feels young and tender but wise beyond her years." Roger Ebert said "DEAD CALM generates genuine tension, because the story is so simple and the performances are so straightforward. This is not a gimmick film and Kidman and Zane do generate real, palpable hatred in their scenes together." DEAD CALM is streaming on FilmRise or available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu, DirectTV and others. Sometimes a good scare can be very entertaining.
