Continuing our focus on female filmmakers today our Rialto Recommends focus' on writer/director Chloe Zhao who recently became only the second woman and the first Asian woman to win a Golden Globe as Best Director of a feature film for her current film Nomadland. Our Rialto Recommends choice today is Zhao's 2018 film THE RIDER which she both wrote and directed. After suffering a near fatal head injury, a young cowboy undertakes a search for new identity and what it means to be a man in the heartland of America. THE RIDER's hard-hitting drama is only made more effective through writer-director Zhao's use of untrained actors to tell the movie's fact-based tale. The Boston Globe raved "Zhao turns material that might have been treacly and simple-minded into an allegory of male identity...with the quality of myth." While IndieWire said "Zhao's film derives its power from the truth that both drives it and inspires it, and the final result is a wholly unique slice-of-life drama." THE RIDER is streaming on PlutoTV or available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, Vudu, GooglePlay, YouTube, DirectTV and others. Check out THE RIDER and enjoy Zhao's poignant, lyrical work.
