Several months ago we featured Emilio Estevez's 2006 film Bobby. Today we return to Estevez's work and his 2019 film THE PUBLIC. An act of civil disobedience turns into a standoff with police when homeless people in Cincinnati take over the public library to seek shelter from the bitter cold. Rolling Stone raved "Writer-director-star Emilio Estevez turns a library occupied by homeless citizens as ground zero for our under-fire democracy. Bravo!" While the New York Times said "Estevez does an elegant job with this setup, creating a low-key, uncondescending portrait of lives on the edge." THE PUBLIC is streaming on Peacock or available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others. THE PUBLIC was a film that got lost when it was released theatrically in the US in the spring of 2019. It deserves to be seen.
