The passing of actress Jessica Walter reminded us that we had not yet recommended Clint Eastwood's 1971 directorial debut the thriller PLAY MISTY FOR ME. A brief fling between a male disc jockey and an obsessed female fan takes a frightening, and perhaps even deadly turn when another woman enters the picture. PLAY MISTY FOR ME is a coolly calculating psychological thriller that manages to scare the audience even if it is just using textbook thrills. Roger Ebert in his four star review said "There is no purpose to a suspense thriller, I suppose, except to involve us, scare us, to give us moments of vicarious terror. PLAY MISTY FOR ME does that with an almost cruel efficiency." And the Chicago Reader said "Clint Eastwood wisely chose a strong, simple thriller for his first film as a director, and the project is remarkable in its self-effacing dedication to getting the craft right." PLAY MISTY FOR ME is available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others. Revisit this thriller that is in many ways credited as an inspiration for the 80's film Fatal Attraction.
