Our next Rialto Recommends is Robert Redford's 1988 directorial film THE MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR. In the tiny town of Milagro, New Mexico, where the local water is a premium resource, shady developer Ladd Devine (Richard Bradford) has conceived a glitzy resort that will ultimately siphon off all the water from the neighboring crop-fields. When handyman and farmer Joe Mondragon (Chick Vennera) accidentally breaks a water valve reserved for major companies, he inadvertently sets off a small-scale water-rights war between the farmers and the developers. Roger Ebert said "There is a lot of love and joy in THE MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR. Braga’s performance is especially warm; she’s all over town, hectoring the newspaper editor, gathering signatures on a petition, marveling that she knew all along that Mondragon had it in him to do something wonderful." THE MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR is available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, Apple, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others. Check out this over-looked gem from Robert Redford.
