Through the years we've seen many movies that trace their origins to plays. Our next Rialto Recommends won two Tony Awards in 1983 for Best New Play and Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for its author and star Harvey Fierstein. Adapted into a feature length film in 1988 TORCH SONG TRILOGY was directed by Paul Bogart and starring Fierstein, Matthew Broderick, Anne Bancroft and Brian Kerwin. A very personal story that is both funny and poignant, TORCH SONG TRILOGY chronicles a New Yorker's search for love, respect and tradition in a world that seems not especially made for him. From Arnold's hilarious steps toward domestic bliss with a reluctant school teacher, to his first truly promising love affair with a young fashion model, Arnold's greatest challenge remains his complicated relationship with his mother. But armed with a keenly developed sense of humor and oftentimes piercing wit, Arnold continues to test the commonly accepted terms of endearment--and endurance--in a universally affecting story that confirms that happiness is well worth carrying a torch for. The Washington Post said "The themes are universal, and Arnold is an Everyperson who wants to be loved not for what others want him to be, but for what he really is -- "a person, a valuable person."" And Roger Ebert wrote "I have not seen anyone quite like Fierstein in the movies, and the fact that he is a specific individual gives this material a charm and weight it might have lacked if an interchangeable actor had played the role." TORCH SONG TRILOGY is streaming exclusively on HBOMax HERE.
