Sometimes movies get released in periods of time when there are too many similar films chasing the same audience. This happens particularly in the Fall and Winter with the films aimed at adult audiences. Sometimes talent insists on an awards season release time frame. Sometimes the distributors think a film needs to be in theatres within a month or two after premiering at the fall festivals (Venice, Telluride, Toronto, New York). As an exhibitor it sometimes frustrates us when good films get lost but unfortunately, we do not control the release dates for films. Our next Rialto Recommends is Edward Norton's 2019 film MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN. Released in early November last year MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN was a film we had to let go of too soon due to the incredible pressure to keep opening new movies. It's a movie we liked a great deal and wish more people had seen. Set against the backdrop of 1950s New York, MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN follows Lionel Essrog (Norton), a lonely private detective afflicted with Tourette's Syndrome, as he ventures to solve his friend's murder. Armed only with a few clues and the powerful engine of his obsessive mind, Lionel unravels closely-guarded secrets that hold the fate of the whole city in the balance. The New York Times proclaimed "MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN is a very smart movie, bristling with ideas about history, politics, art and urban planning." While the Washington Post said "the milieu and message of MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN ring startlingly true, at a time when raw power, rank impunity and ruthless greed are as ascendant as ever." MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN is now streaming on HBOMax, HBONow, HBOgo and DirectTV HERE. It is also available to rent for a modest fee from Vudu, Apple, FandangoNow, and DirectTV.
