Writer/Director Alan Rudolph made his film debut as a writer/director of his own work in 1977 with Welcome to L.A. Throughout the 80's, 90's and 2000's he continued to forge his own path much like his contemporaries John Sayles and Robert Altman. Our next Rialto Recommends is TROUBLE IN MIND his 1985 homage to the noir films of the 40's. The very noirish log line for the film reads as follows: The lives of an ex-con, a coffee-shop owner, and a young couple looking to make it rich intersect in the fictional and hypnotic Rain City. Time Out said "Rudolph's script is both playful and precise, his images fantastic yet real, the music elegiac but ecstatically sung by an impassioned Marianne Faithfull. Part thriller, part comic fantasy, part love story, Trouble in Mind even offers an ambiguous, high-flown ending that suggests this really is the stuff that dreams are made of." In his four star review Roger Ebert said "To really get inside the spirit of "Trouble in Mind," it would probably help to see "Choose Me" (1984) first. Both films are the work of Alan Rudolph, who is creating a visual world as distinctive as Fellini's and as cheerful as Edward Hopper's. He does an interesting thing. He combines his stylistic excesses with a lot of emotional sincerity, so that we believe these characters are really serious about their hopes and dreams, even if they do seem to inhabit a world of imagination." TROUBLE IN MIND is streaming on HBOMax and DirectTv HERE. (Choose Me is available on Amazon Prime and PopcornFlix.)
