We are missing being at the Toronto International Film Festival this year. Every year since 2004 we have attended to spend 11 days watching movies and discovering films. Our next Rialto Recommends is one of those discoveries from the 2016 edition of TIFF. Released theatrically in the winter of 2017 A UNITED KINGDOM tells the inspiring true story of Seretse Khama, the King of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana), and Ruth Williams, the London office worker he married in 1948 in the face of fierce opposition from their families and the British and South African governments. Seretse and Ruth defied family, Apartheid and empire - their love triumphed over every obstacle flung in their path and in so doing they transformed their nation and inspired the world. David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike star in a well-acted, solidly crafted, and all-around worthy film. A UNITED KINGDOM presents an absorbing look at a singular true-life love story. The Los Angeles Times said "The opening title "Based on a true story" can cover a multitude of movie sins, but in "A United Kingdom," it unlocks the door to a romantic drama that grows more remarkable by the minute." While IndieWire exclaimed "The result is a rich, stirring look at one of modern society's most enduring -- and yes, inspirational -- marriages, underpinned by political machinations that remain all too relevant." While the Globe and Mail said "Director Amma Asante is carving a niche for herself, making gorgeous-looking cinema from untold histories." A UNITED KINGDOM is available for rent for a modest fee from RedBox, Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu, DirectTV and others HERE.
