Our next Rialto Recommends is a recent discovery. Writer/Director Lucia Castro's debut feature END OF THE CENTURY has drawn comparisons from critics to both Richard Linklater's Before trilogy and the movie Sliding Doors. When Ocho (Juan Barberini), a 30-something Argentine poet on vacation in Barcelona, spots Javi (Ramón Pujol), a Spaniard from Berlin, from the balcony of his Airbnb, the attraction is subtle but persistent. After a missed connection on the beach, a third chance encounter escalates to a seemingly random hookup. But are these two merely beautiful strangers in a foreign city or are they part of each other’s histories—and maybe even their destinies? IndieWire raved "Like a great poem, END OF THE CENTURY gives voice to a seemingly indescribable feeling, one anyone who’s ever fallen in love will recognize from deep in their soul — as if bumping into an old friend you forgot how much you liked." While TimeOut said "A beautifully crafted love story, END OF THE CENTURY has two understated, thoughtful performances at its heart. It explores its existential themes – of the passing of time and of roads not taken – with delicacy and deftness. It’s a road worth travelling." END OF THE CENTURY is streaming on Dekkoo (we've never heard of it before this) or available to rent for a modest fee from Vudu or Apple.
