Our next Rialto Recommends is a movie we had hoped to show in our theatres but because of the pandemic it went directly to streaming. Disney/Pixar's new film SOUL is another masterpiece of animation expanding the storytelling potential of the form in ways similar to Inside Out and Wall-E. Joe is a middle-school band teacher whose life hasn't quite gone the way he expected. His true passion is jazz -- and he's good. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have soul. A film as beautiful to contemplate as it is to behold, SOUL proves Pixar's power to deliver outstanding all-ages entertainment remains undimmed. IndieWire said "Like some of the best jazz compositions, it uses a traditional framework to veer off in many unexpected directions, so that even the inevitable end point feels just right." While the New York Times said "Like other great New York movies, it invites you to identify particular intersections and storefronts, to compare its imagined geography with the city of your own experience." SOUL is streaming exclusively on Disney+. Check out SOUL it is good for all of our souls in these troubled, troubling times.
