Our next Rialto Recommends is Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud's 2007 animated film PERSEPOLIS based on Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novel. In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Statrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own. PERSEPOLIS is an emotionally powerful, dramatically enthralling autobiographical gem, and the film's simple black-and-white images are effective and bold. The New York Times said "PERSEPOLIS, austere as it may look, is full of warmth and surprise, alive with humor and a fierce independence of spirit." While Newsweek said "Not to be missed in any language. In a year that has given us such marvelous animated movies as Ratatouille and Paprika, this vibrant, sly and moving personal odyssey takes pride of place." PERSEPOLIS is available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, Vugu, Apple, GooglePlay, YouTube and others. Check out this unique animated gem that was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar.
