Our next Rialto Recommends comes to us from Danish director Lone Scherfig known for her films Italian for Beginners, Wilber Wants to Kill Himself, and An Education. Her 2011 film ONE DAY is based upon David Nicholls novel who also adapted his own screenplay. Anne Hathway, Jim Sturgess and Patricia Clarkson star. After spending the night together on the night of their college graduation Dexter and Emma are shown each year on the same date to see where they are in their lives. They are sometimes together, sometimes not, on that day. The San Francisco Chronicle raved "ONE DAY is a beautiful movie, but beautiful in a way that life often is, not movies. Nothing is sudden or easy, either for the characters or for the audience, and there are no thunderbolts from the blue." While the New York Times said "ONE DAY turns an episodic story into an anthology of feelings and associations, many familiar, a few surprising, some embarrassing and one or two worth holding onto." While Roger Ebert commented on this summer release "In a season of movies dumb and dumber, ONE DAY has style, freshness, and witty bantering dialogue." ONE DAY is streaming on CinemaxGo and DirectTV or available to rent from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu, FlixFling and others for a modest fee.
