We were saddened to learn today of the passing of British director Michael Apted. Known for his groundbreaking Up documentary series (Seven Up, Seven Plus 7, 21 Up, 28 Up and so on through 2019's 63 Up), Apted was also an acclaimed narrative filmmaker having helmed such critically acclaimed films as Coal Miner's Daughter, Gorillas in the Mist, Nell, Gorky Park, Thunderheart and even a James Bond movie - The World Is Not Enough. For our Rialto Recommends today we are choosing Apted's less well know Grammy Award winning 1985 music documentary BRING ON THE NIGHT about Sting and a group of African American jazz musicians rehearsing to go on tour in support of Sting's first solo album The Dream of the Blue Turtles. The New York Times said "In addition to its considerable merits as a music documentary, Michael Apted's BRING ON THE NIGHT is of additional interest as a film that winds up being inadvertently revealing, and that seems to change shape as it goes along. Its avowed purpose was to document a few days in the lives of Sting, the lead singer and songwriter of the Police, and the American jazz musicians with whom he was about to begin an international concert tour. What emerges instead is the process by which collaborations, friendships and chains of command are established within this newly formed group, as well as a good illustration of how powerful a role a film crew can play in the very process it is attempting to record." Normally for our Rialto Recommends we like to choose films available on major streaming services. We could only find BRING ON THE NIGHT available here on Facebook Watch: Michael Apted's filmography is well worth exploring in depth but do also check out BRING ON THE NIGHT.
