A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Our next Rialto Recommends is a film that many people thought they knew what it was going to be based upon the title and the key art. But though A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD does feature Fred Rogers as a key character, the film is ultimately not his story. 2019's A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD is really the story of Lloyd Vogel. Who is Lloyd Vogel you may ask? An award-winning cynical journalist, Lloyd Vogel, begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write an Esquire profile piece on the beloved television icon Fred Rogers. After his encounter with Rogers, Vogel's perspective on life is transformed. Much like the beloved TV personality that inspired it, A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD offers a powerfully affecting message about acceptance and understanding. The Washington Post said "In an era that seems fatally mired in fear, anger and mistrust, A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD arrives as something more than a movie. It feels like an answered prayer." While Rolling Stone declared "Under Marielle Heller's transfixing direction, that consummate actor Tom Hanks succeeds triumphantly at moving past imitation to find Mister Rogers' nurturing soul. It's a damn-near irresistible movie that speaks from the heart. Let it in." Time Magazine said "This is a movie that's both entertainment and spiritual toolkit-take from it what you need." Directed by Marielle Heller who previously directed Can You Ever Forgive Me? directs A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD which is streaming on Starz and DirectTV or available for purchase from Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others. This is a movie for our troubled times. Please don't pre-judge it. See it with an open heart and mind and let it envelop you.
