Dame Maggie Smith celebrates her 86th birthday on December 28th so in honor of her continued contribution to independent cinema our next Rialto Recommends is the 2005 release LADIES IN LAVENDER starring two great Dames, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. Andrea, a gifted young Polish violinist from Krakow, is bound for America when he is swept overboard by a storm. When the Widdington sisters discover the handsome stranger on the beach below their house, they nurse him back to health. However, the presence of the musically talented young man disrupts the peaceful lives of Ursula (Smith) and Janet (Dench) and the community in which they live. Written and directed by Charles Dance and based upon a short story by Wiliam J. Locke, LADIES IN LAVENDER is a charming period drama that quietly showcases fine performances by its two stars. The Washington Post raved "A funny, civilized little romantic drama in which Smith co-stars with the equally estimable Judi Dench." While Variety said "Full of delightful moments that throw into high relief the actors' craft." Spend just under two hours with a couple of Dames and a lovely cup of tea. LADIES IN LAVENDER is streaming on AmazonPrime, Hoopla, Tubi, and Kanopy or available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and Apple.
