We remain enchanted with the fabulous new Disney animated musical, Frozen! When a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, Anna, a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff and his sidekick reindeer Sven on an epic journey to find Anna's sister Elsa, the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell. Encountering mystical trolls, a funny snowman named Olaf, Everest-like extremes and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction. Peter Hartlaub in the San Francisco Chronicle has the little man out of his seat clapping wildly! Read his rave review here.
Katniss Everdeen in all her kick-ass glory remains in El Cerrito this week! Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever. Randy Myers writing in the San Jose Mercury News says, "She [Jennifer Lawrence] sets the screen on fire, and so does 'Catching Fire,' one of this year's best and most thought-provoking blockbusters." Here is the full review.
Join us for another of the National Theatre's Anniversary special encores, The Habit of Art, by Alan Bennett on Wednesday, December 11. This fabulous play sold out in London and it sold out when we presented it here the first time! Don't miss this opportunity to see a play from this venerable Tony-winner (The History Boys and The Madness of King George). In The Habit of Art Bennett imagines a meeting between Benjamin Britten as he is writing Death in Venice and his former collaborator and friend, W H Auden. During this meeting, their first in twenty five years Bennett and his characters reflect on growing old, creativity, inspiration and persistence past the point of passion: ultimately, on the habit of art. Tickets for this and the wonderful production 50 Years on Stage on Monday, December 9 are available here.
The El Cerrito Environmental Quality Committee presents Rebels With a Cause this Saturday, December 7 at 10am. Rebels With a Cause is the story of "regular people" standing up and saving the Marin Coast. This free screening is a great opportunity to see the fabulous Marin coast on the big screen as well as celebrating successful environmental activism!
