The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)

Told in a flashback, US Senator Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) tells the story of how years ago, as a young lawyer, he came to a small town in which a gang of outlaws terrorized and robbed him including Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). He seeks revenge and finds it in the help of local cowboy Tom Doniphon (John Wayne). When the outlaws are finally killed off in a showdown, the lawyer becomes a hero, which leads to his political success. Dismissed as just another cowboy opus at the time of its release, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance has since taken its proper place as one of the great Western classics.
